Getting started in The Secret World

Funcom have released more details of their upcoming massively-multiplayer roleplaying game The Secret World, with a video revealing what players can expect to experience at the start of the game and showing some combat scenes.

The Secret World is set in a Lovecraftian version of the real world. Characters will explore cities such as London, New York and Seoul while fighting the undead and other monsters, and uncovering ancient conspiracies.

Eve Online’s top roleplaying guild destroyed by traitor

Eve Online’s top roleplaying guild destroyed by traitor

Many of us enjoy games which let players make a real impact on the world, and none do this better at the moment than Eve Online.

Guilds, known as corporations or alliances, can own space, construct space stations and install upgrades which help pilots track down rare ore deposits or pirate bases.

But Eve is also a brutal world where anything goes, as the game’s most successful roleplaying guild learned recently.

Ushra’Khan, an alliance with roughly 1,100 members (that’s characters, not players), lost their space after they were betrayed by one of their leaders, a character named Tarac Nor, who was the alliance’s diplomat.

He kicked every corporation out of the alliance except for one small “holding corporation”, effectively giving him total control of the alliance and the 25 solar systems it owned.

Ushra’Khan’s background ties in directly with Eve’s official storyline. They are freedom fighters of the Minmatar race, who were once enslaved by the Amarr Empire. In Eve’s fiction, the Amarr are religious fanatics and the nearest thing the game has to a stereotyped evil empire.

Another Neverwinter interview

The Forge, the toolset, how extensive is that going to be for players?

What we’ve done is take versions of our own tools and skin them, simplify them, and make it possible for players to create things like we do every day. Naturally that means they can be extremely complex, and one of the things we’re looking at now is ways of organizing the tools so that people can get in and do it without needing extensive knowledge of 3-D tools. Fans of the original Neverwinter I don’t think will be disappointed, and my personal goal is to include a group of people, like myself, who just want to get in and make simple adventures without having to tackle a large amount of complexity. It’s easy to make complex tools.

Gamespot Neverwinter Q&A

GS: And on a similar note, Cryptic’s previous games have made frequent use of instanced playfields to let solo players or small groups have their own private adventure. Can you speak to how instances will be used in Neverwinter? Do you have a rough estimate of how much of the game’s content will be instanced versus being open-world/shared space?

JE: This is a tough question, if only because it presupposes an organization along traditional MMORPG lines (that is, a large persistent zone with many instances connected to it). This is a co-op RPG, so comparing it to other RPGs such as the original Neverwinter Nights or Oblivion would be more appropriate. Some locations are public; some are just for teammates. But it isn’t quite the setup of a big zone with side instances.

Warhammer 40k Dark Millennium Online Video

I’ve not been following this games dev but as an avid played of Epic 40k in my youth it looks promising. Not sure how it would fair on the RP front at this point, may be too much blasting? Anyway THQ recently released this video of one of the races in the game.

Yeah this is also a bit of a test post for video content, but hey, it is kind of relevant.

I’ll work on proper news soon, I’ve been busy working on the site migration and not reading / researching!
